It is imperative that students have an understanding of safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology. Teachers have a responsibility to their students to provide them with the rules and regulations on using technology and online resources. If students have the knowledge of the rights and wrongs of using technology, it will benefit them for years to come. There is so much information available online and misuse, reproduction without citation, or infringing on copyright laws can be illegal and have serious consequences. Preparation and leading by example is the key to ensuring our students are using technology safely.
Digital etiquette is the standard of how people should conduct themselves while using technology and the internet. This includes being considerate and respectful in all interactions online. Teaching students how to properly use and respect online technology ensures that they will get the most out of learning through technology and be courteous. It is also important to ensure students don’t conduct in cyber bullying or any other hurtful acts with their peers. Having rules within your own classroom will help establish what is expected and students will know the norms and guidelines that they should abide by.
Technology can help to provide learners with many new experiences that are centered around them. Activities using technology can be tailored for each individual students needs without much effort. Small changes can be made to challenge and teach students on many different levels and with different learning styles. It is very important to give every child in the classroom an opportunity to use and experience learning through technology. Many students may not have access to certain technologies at home. Providing time in the classroom may be the only chance students have to enjoy learning through other technological mediums. Although this would be ideal, some schools may not have adequate funding to offer this. That is why it is important to incorporate all types of technology, not only elaborate and expensive ways.
Global awareness is a huge benefit when using technology. With all the information online, students now have a way to contact to other students who are across the world. This instant access can open student’s eyes to other cultures, religions, and countries. As educators, we can use technology as a way to embrace others and integrate culturally diversity in our lessons more readily. We can also encourage students to use the internet as their resource to find out more about new places and what is going on in the world today.
ISTE is the International Society for Technology in Education. This is where the standards (NETS) for use of technology in education can be found. There are standards for teachers, students and administrators. According to www.iste.org standards for students “prepare to work, live, and contribute to the social and civic fabric of their communities.” NETS are in place to ensure that education is changing along with society and that we keep up with the ever changing world around us.

Very well said, Brenna. I like the part about using all technology available, not just the elaborate and expensive.
